History of the Volkswagen Golf

While the Volkswagen Beetle was originally dubbed the “people’s car”, it began to decline in sales, which prompted the automaker to come up with a new option for consumers. In 1974, the Golf was born. It offered drivers the utility of a hatchback and a sleek design that was quite popular at the time. It was so popular, in fact, that it continues to be the most successful car in Europe. The pope even owned a Golf at one point.

The Golf has gone through seven generations of redesigns – the most recent being in 2012. Today’s model offers drivers benefits like 53.7 cubic ft of cargo volume, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, SiriusXM® Satellite Radio, and a 6 year/72,000-mile limited warranty. Volkswagen has also created a few models based off the Golf such as the Golf GTI, Golf R, Golf Alltrack, and Golf SportWagen. While similar in most other aspects, the GTI and R have more horsepower and torque than the conventional Golf while the Alltrack and SportWagen have more cargo space.
