In the early 1900s, A.C. Hall began building the foundation of what would become a multi-generational automotive family. While working for Jennings Auto Sales Company in Springfield, Illinois, A.C. quickly discovered that he had a natural talent for selling cars—and, more importantly, a genuine passion for working with people. He especially enjoyed helping customers find vehicles that fit their needs, a philosophy that would become part of the Hall family’s approach to the automotive business for generations to come. A.C. soon acquired two small Ford agencies outside Springfield, but he had his sights set on something bigger. He eventually moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, where he formed the Hall-Herschbach partnership and continued pursuing opportunities in the growing automobile industry. However, the harsh Minnesota winters did not suit his wife, prompting A.C. to sell his interest in the partnership and travel to Detroit to discuss his future with Henry Ford.
According to family legend, Henry Ford offered A.C. the opportunity to open a Ford tractor distributorship two states to the south. But the two strong-willed businessmen reportedly could not agree on the details, and after several heated arguments, their business relationship came to an end. A.C. soon found another opportunity that would change the course of the family’s history: a chance to operate a Chevrolet dealership in Milwaukee. He seized the opportunity, and in 1926, Hall’s Wisconsin story officially began with Chevrolet.
For decades, the business remained firmly in the hands of the Hall family. From 1926 through 2010, A.C.’s two sons, Bob and Latham, took the reins and helped transform Hall Chevrolet into a respected business and pillar of the Milwaukee community. Later, Bob’s son, Andy Hall, joined the family business, carrying the Hall name into its third generation and helping guide the company into a new era.
In the 1980s, Andy recognized another opportunity for growth. As innovative vehicles from Europe and Japan continued to gain popularity with American drivers, he believed they would be a natural complement to Hall’s established Chevrolet business. After seeing the potential in several brands, Andy purchased the two franchises that impressed him most from Jefford’s Motor Company—Mazda and Volkswagen. For two years, the new franchises operated from Hall’s existing location before the family took another major step forward. In 1989, Hall opened a new facility in Brookfield, Wisconsin, creating a new home for the growing business. The facility was later renovated and expanded, and in 2010, Hall expanded its presence into Waukesha, continuing the family’s long-standing commitment to serving Wisconsin drivers.
The next generation was already preparing to carry the tradition forward. Andy’s son, Charlie Hall, officially joined the dealership full-time in 2003 after spending much of his childhood around the business. Long before becoming part of the leadership team, Charlie learned the business from the ground up—washing cars, cutting grass, and eventually selling cars when he was old enough. Those early experiences gave him a firsthand understanding of the customers, employees, and community that make a family business special.
Today, Hall Automotive remains deeply rooted in its Wisconsin heritage. What began with A.C. Hall’s passion for automobiles and people more than a century ago has grown into a multi-generational family business representing Mazda and Volkswagen and serving drivers throughout the greater Milwaukee and Waukesha areas.
