What Is an Out-the-Door Car Price? A Simple Guide to OTD Pricing

If you’re researching how to buy a new or used car, you’ve probably seen one piece of advice repeated by automotive websites, consumer advocates, and car-buying experts: Always ask for the out-the-door price.
At Hall Mazda and Hall Volkswagen, we think that’s good advice. The out-the-door price, often shortened to OTD price, helps you understand what a vehicle will actually cost before you agree to purchase it. It can also help identify unexpected dealer fees, mandatory add-ons, or products that weren’t included in the price you originally saw advertised.
That’s exactly why we believe dealerships should embrace out-the-door pricing rather than avoid the conversation.
At Hall, it fits the way we believe buying a vehicle should work:
Simple. Transparent. Easy.

What Is the Out-the-Door Price of a Car?

An out-the-door price is the total amount required to purchase a vehicle and drive it home.
Instead of looking only at the advertised vehicle price or negotiating based solely on a monthly payment, asking for the OTD price answers a much more useful question: “What will I actually pay for this vehicle?”
An out-the-door price typically includes:
Because taxes and registration requirements can vary depending on where a vehicle will be registered and the specifics of the transaction, the final OTD price may differ from one customer to another. But the purpose is always the same: Know the complete number before you buy.

Why Do Car-Buying Experts Recommend Asking for the OTD Price?

The term “out-the-door price” has become such a common part of car-buying advice for a reason.
A vehicle can look like a great deal online based on its advertised price. But an advertised price doesn’t tell the whole story if additional mandatory products, dealer-installed accessories, protection packages, or other charges are added later.
That’s why consumers are frequently encouraged to ask: “What’s the out-the-door price?”
We agree with the question. Customers should understand how the price they saw online becomes the amount they’re ultimately asked to pay.

Does Hall Add Mandatory Dealer Add-Ons? No.

Our pricing philosophy is straightforward.
Advertised Vehicle Price + Disclosed Dealer Service Fee + Applicable Taxes & Government Fees = Your Hall Out-the-Door Price
We aren’t going to advertise a vehicle at one price and then require you to purchase an additional protection package or dealer-installed product in order to buy it at that price. We do offer additional products and services that many customers choose to purchase, including vehicle service contracts, maintenance programs, and vehicle protection products.
The important distinction is simple: They’re optional. You decide.
Choosing an additional product will change the final amount of your transaction, but purchasing one isn’t a condition of receiving our advertised vehicle price.

Are Extended Warranties Included in an Out-the-Door Price?

Not unless you choose to purchase one.
During the purchase process, you may be offered optional products such as a vehicle service contract or other protection and maintenance options.
We believe customers should have an opportunity to learn about those products and decide whether they provide value for their individual situation.
But there’s a difference between offering an optional product and requiring an add-on to purchase the vehicle at its advertised price.
At Hall, optional means optional.

How Can You Compare Prices Between Car Dealerships?

If you’re comparing similar vehicles at different dealerships, comparing only the advertised prices may not give you the complete picture.
Consider asking each dealership for an itemized out-the-door price. Then look at how the numbers were calculated.
If one vehicle appears to be priced lower online but the final purchase amount includes mandatory products or additional dealer charges, the advertised-price difference may not represent the actual difference between the two offers. That’s why we’re comfortable saying: Compare our out-the-door price.
We welcome the comparison.

Can I Get an Out-the-Door Price Before Visiting Hall? Yes.

You shouldn’t have to spend hours at a dealership simply to find out what a vehicle costs.
If you’ve found a new Mazda, new Volkswagen, or pre-owned vehicle you’re interested in, contact us and ask for the out-the-door price. Because applicable taxes and government fees can depend upon where the vehicle will be registered, we may need some basic information to calculate an accurate figure. We’ll explain the numbers so you can understand how we arrived at the total.

Should I Negotiate the Monthly Payment or the Out-the-Door Price?

A monthly payment can be important when determining whether a vehicle fits your budget, but payment alone doesn’t tell you the total cost of the vehicle.
The payment can change based on several factors, including the amount financed, down payment, trade equity, interest rate, and loan term. That’s why understanding the vehicle price and out-the-door amount can be useful before deciding how you’d like to finance the purchase.
Know the price. Then determine the payment structure that works for you.

What About a Trade-In?

A trade-in can affect the final transaction and, depending on applicable tax rules, may also affect the amount of sales tax due. We believe the same principle of transparency should apply. We’ll show you what we’re offering for your trade separately so you can understand both sides of the transaction. Your vehicle purchase shouldn’t become difficult to understand simply because you’re trading another vehicle.

A Better Car-Buying Experience Starts With Transparency

At Hall, we’ve been serving Southeast Wisconsin since 1926.
The tools customers use to shop for vehicles have changed dramatically during that time. Today, much of the shopping process happens online before a customer ever contacts a dealership. We think that’s a good thing. Customers have more information, can compare more vehicles, and can ask better questions. And “What’s the out-the-door price?” is a good question. We don’t view OTD pricing as a negotiating tactic that puts the customer and dealership on opposite sides of the table. We view it as an opportunity to be clear.

The Hall Approach to Out-the-Door Pricing

Our philosophy can be summed up pretty simply: The price you see is the price you pay for the vehicle.
We clearly disclose our dealer service fee. We add the applicable taxes, title, registration, and government fees. Additional protection, maintenance, and vehicle service products are available if you want them. The choice is yours.
  • No mandatory dealer add-ons.
  • No surprise products required to receive the advertised price.
  • No waiting until the end of the transaction to discover what the vehicle actually costs.
Know Your Number Before You Buy
If you’re shopping for a vehicle, don’t be afraid to ask any dealership for an out-the-door price.
In fact, we encourage it. And if you’re shopping at Hall Mazda or Hall Volkswagen, you don’t have to wonder how we’ll react when you ask.
We want you to know your number before you buy.
Ask us for your out-the-door price. We’ll show you how we got there. Because buying a vehicle shouldn’t be about discovering what’s hidden in the price.
It should be simple, transparent, and easy.
