The Complete 2020 Mazda Engine Guide
You may have heard or read about how responsive and efficient Mazda engines are from a review or a salesperson. Those traits are definitely something most people want in their vehicles. But many vehicles have more than one engine option. For instance, most midsize crossovers have an available four-cylinder and V6 engine.
How about the CX-5? Does it have a V6 model? Does it have any options at all? What kind of engine does the 2020 CX-5 have?
The Skyactiv-G Series
There are three version of this engine currently available on US-market Mazda vehicles: the 2.0-liter four-cylinder, the 2.5-liter four-cylinder, and the 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Most Mazda vehicles employ the Skyactiv-G engine in one form or another. Horsepower and torque vary by vehicle. Take a look:

The Skyactiv-D Diesel
In the US, there is only one vehicle with the 2.2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine: the 2020 Mazda CX-5 Signature Diesel. It produces 168 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque. It gives the CX-5 Diesel a 27/30/28 mpg spread. That’s a noticeable improvement over the 24/30/26 and 22/27/24 spreads of the 2.5-liter and turbo 2.5-liter CX-5 models, respectively.
The Next-Gen Skyactiv-X
The newest engine developed by Mazda is the 2.0-liter Skyactiv-X four-cylinder. It’s estimated to get 44-highway mpg through blending diesel and traditional combustion technology. So far, it’s only been employed in the European production model 2020 Mazda3. It is unknown if the engine will see a US release.
